Disaster Reflief

Our location in the Central Plains of the U.S. gives us the unique opportunity to respond rapidly in comfort and service when disaster strikes. Whether it is through financial support, clothing and home drives, first responder assistance and support, or debris removal and reconstruction, McFarlin stands ready to help.

Kairos Prison Ministry

Kairos unites Christians to make a difference for Christ in the hearts of prisoners. An army of volunteers rally to become the hands and feet of Christ for up to 42 inmates who come seeking a new way of life. Additional Details

Five years ago an opportunity was presented to the Student Ministries to build a house for a family whose husband/father had died unexpectedly, leaving behind a family that included a hearing-impaired child and a child confined to a wheelchair. Because we didn’t have the expertise to complete a house from the ground up, we had to pass on this opportunity. From this, however, a desire to do more was born!

Leadership for the House From The Ground Up comes from Student Ministries, United Methodist Men, Missions Committee, and others committed to Changing Lives That Change the World.

This year the House From The Ground Up will be building a house in Edouch, Texas, just north of Donna, Texas and East of McAllen, Texas.

The house will be built in 2 phases: An adult team will begin work on the house from February 23 to March 4, 2017. Then, students that are part of the Spring Break Mission, March 11 – 18, 2017, will complete the house. Adults who are part of the pre-build team can go for part of the time or the entire time.

Cost:

The cost for the pre-build team is $200 per person. This includes basic transportation, meals, and lodging at the Mercedes First United Methodist Church. In addition, donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the house.

Transportation

  • Church vehicles will be taken down to the Rio Grande Valley.
  • Some folks will choose to take their own vehicles.
  • Flying in and out of McAllen or Harlingen is also an option (this cost is not covered in the $200).

Lodging

There are 3 housing options:

  • First United Methodist Church in Mercedes, Texas (the cost of this location is included)
  • Super 8 Motel in Weslaco, Texas (cost is an extra $55 per night). You can check this option out at wyndhamhotels.com/Super8/Weslaco
  • Best Western Town Center Inn in Weslaco, Texas (cost is an extra $68 per night). You can check this option out at bwtowncenterinn.com
